Can we be Jersey?
Jersey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Estonia GDP in PPP is around 19,692 and we are 30,687 ranked 25th on the 2006 census.

(I cannot agree more with it...those annoying apple fans)有點怕 Ubuntu也快步上後塵了。

At first when i read the title, I want to scream - heeey, hands off from my food! Don't you know that you do not even have enough food for your people to eat. Give up the stupid plan first promoted by the unthoughtful westerners.
But keep reading, I found there's surely a problem. They want to lower the dependence on those countries exporting gasoline and also reduce the greenhouse gas emission. But ... biofuel is definitely not for you, those who have poor, hungry people more than half of the population.
We are people who wants to be God. We found we are run out of sources, we want to find some way to solve, we thought we got it.
But again, we only find again how stupid we are and fragile in God's hand. The wealth goes to some very small group of people, the destruction is what most people gonna take, as it always is.

The acquisition of ABN AMRO
M&A Milestone: $101 Billion Deal For ABN Amro"

What happened exactly with Skype in the past one year, after I left?
Comment:
" One need not look farther than Apple and the Spindler years to see what happens to a successfully disruptive “tech” company when it’s taken over by “Marketing” folks.
When I first heard that Skype was being aquired by eBay, I was willing to give it time to see what came of the acquisition; I haven’t been disappointed yet. I only hope that Skype continues to improve it’s client programs and network as it has in the past year.
Good luck Neo-Skype, if you fail where you’ve risen, I’m more than sure someone will be there to pick up the pieces…
(See Napster –> Kazaa, Spindler-Apple –> Jobs-Apple, SuprNova –> The Pirate Bay, for “torch grabbing” details)
" Hmmm…
This is just a hunch, but I would guess that the pre-acquisition fire-ees are being scraped up off the London sidewalks right about now, if their buddies haven’t already tossed them into tart-filled private limos for the ride home (tart = hooker). As for the poor sods who joined Skype after the deal thinking they were joining a dynamic web 2.0 powerhouse, and then got fired a few weeks or months into the job, I guess they’ll be telling their kids “it’s scientific experiments for the lot of you”.

Luxembourg, December 15th, 2006 – Skype today announced two key personnel changes. Alex Kazim, Skype’s President, will be leaving Skype in January to return to eBay. Kazim, an 8-year eBay veteran, joined Skype immediately following eBay’s acquisition of the company 14 months ago. He was responsible for product development and innovation at Skype and reported to Niklas Zennström, Skype’s Chief Executive Officer.

"Skype’s business model (is)was fundamentally flawed.
Adding subscribers will constantly reduce calls that generate revenue and if everyone in the world were to get skype, it will have zero revenue.
There is a critical point beyond which having to maintain infra-structure costs a lot more than revenues. With 220 Million accounts, my calculation says that Skype reached that point a while ago !!
Most businesses would love hockey stick growth, skype would collapse even if it hit halfway!
The management & VCs sold out at a good time.
As PT Barnum said .. there is sucker born every minute.

"Here’s a suggestion to every Internet executive: take a Post-It note, write “EBay wasted $3 billion on Skype” and stick it to your monitor. Stare at it the next time some hot social whatever-2.0 company comes by and talks about growing fast and finding a revenue model later."
“Right after the bust, people started focusing on business models and revenue,” said Greg Sterling, a Silicon Valley analyst and consultant. “There has been a little bit of departure on that, with a focus on building the biggest audience and figuring that revenues will follow. That is the attitude that has prevailed over the last couple years, and it may not be sound.”
================================================================
I am wondering a issue which may trouble the investors and CEOs for long - how to evaluate a company?
Skype is where the employees are happy, kind of techie geek atmosphere. But when it comes to Wall Street and San Jose, people only care about one thing - profit.
When people do what they like, being happy, they are able to do the right thing.
One need not look farther than Apple and the Spindler years to see what happens to a successfully disruptive “tech” company when it’s taken over by “Marketing” folks."

Municipal Wi-Fi | Reality bites | Economist.com
American cities' plans for ubiquitous internet access are running into trouble
IT WAS supposed to democratise the internet and turn America's city-dwellers into citizen-surfers. In 2004 the mayors of Philadelphia and San Francisco unveiled ambitious plans to provide free wireless-internet access to all residents using Wi-Fi, a technology commonly used to link computers to the internet in homes, offices, schools and coffee-shops. Across America, hundreds of cities followed suit. Yet many municipal Wi-Fi projects have since been hit by mounting costs, poor coverage and weak demand. This week Chicago became the first big city to abandon its plans for a city-wide network. “Everyone would like something for free,” says Chuck Haas of MetroFi, a supplier of municipal Wi-Fi systems. But the numbers do not add up.
Most city governments did not want to build or run the Wi-Fi systems themselves, so they farmed the job out to specialist firms such as EarthLink and MetroFi. These companies initially agreed to bear all expenses, expecting to sign up 10-25% of each city's population for a fee-based wireless service. In some places this was to have been supplemented by a free service at lower speed, or supported by advertising. Some cities also planned to subsidise access for poor residents.
But municipal Wi-Fi schemes have been struggling to make ends meet. EarthLink, which runs networks in Philadelphia and New Orleans, recently admitted that “the Wi-Fi business as currently constituted will not provide an acceptable return.” This week the firm said it would lay off 900 workers, including the head of its municipal Wi-Fi division, the future of which is now in doubt. The root of the problem is that city-wide Wi-Fi, which relies on outdoor radio transmitters, does not provide good access inside buildings, since it uses weak signals which do not always penetrate thick exterior walls. Proponents of the technology also underestimated the number of transmitters that would be needed to provide blanket coverage. Most networks deployed between 2004 and 2006 used between 20% and 100% more nodes than expected, which pushed up costs.
Worse, the networks that have been completed have attracted few users. Taipei's city-wide WiFly system, the largest such network in the world, was reckoned to need 250,000 regular subscribers by the end of 2006 in order to break even, but had attracted only 30,000 by April 2007. America's biggest network, around Tempe, Arizona, was aiming for 32,000 subscribers, but had only 600 in April 2006 and has not provided figures since.
EarthLink and MetroFi have responded by asking city governments to act as “anchor tenants” and agree to spend a guaranteed sum on the service. Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon, accepted such contracts from the beginning; their Wi-Fi schemes are proceeding relatively smoothly. But most cities have balked at the change. Chicago's plans foundered when EarthLink and AT&T, the two firms bidding to build its network, demanded anchor-tenant commitments. MetroFi has lost four contracts since April after asking municipalities to subscribe upfront. The consortium planning to build a Wi-Fi network across 1,500 square miles (3,885 square km) of Silicon Valley also wants to switch to an anchor-tenant model.
One problem with the anchor-tenant approach is that few municipalities are in a position to do much with the networks. Despite vague talk about wireless parking meters and enabling building inspectors to submit reports using Wi-Fi hand-helds, most cities lack the back-office systems needed to do such things. “You're building them a better track,” says Craig Settles, a telecoms consultant, “but they don't even have running shoes yet.”
The one bright spot for municipal Wi-Fi is public safety. After the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001, governments at all levels in America set about improving communications between emergency workers. Dedicated radio spectrum has been set aside, and several cities have built Wi-Fi networks to transmit images from surveillance cameras and the like. The hope is that separate systems providing internet access can piggyback on these networks, as EarthLink has done with a Wi-Fi system originally built for public-safety purposes in New Orleans. Equipment providers now make nodes that put both the necessary transmitters into a single box, making such roll-outs cheaper.
Some cities will be able to make this approach work, and may then be able to offer their residents free, or at least relatively cheap, Wi-Fi access too. But many others will not, and will have to follow Chicago in abandoning their utopian dreams of city-wide networks. With Wi-Fi, as with most things, you get what you pay for.

Two BBC producers are forced out as more vote-rigging cases emerge - Times Online
Two senior producers were forced to quit the BBC yesterday, after the corporation admitted that producers had fixed four more audience votes and competitions.
Richard Marson, a former editor of Blue Peter, was dismissed, and Ric Blaxill, the head of programmes for the digital radio station 6 Music resigned – taking the total number of enforced departures at the broadcaster to three.
Mr Blaxill, a former Top of the Pops executive producer and creative director of Capital Radio, is the most senior of the casualties. He quit as the BBC admitted that production staff invented fictitious winners on the Clare McDonnell show and the Tom Robinson programme, both on 6 Music.
Mr Marson was forced out after the BBC also confirmed The Times’s report that producers had overruled an audience vote on the naming of the current Blue Peter cat, Socks.
