This year could have changed things. The G.O.P. had three urbane presidential candidates. But the class-warfare clichés took control. Rudy Giuliani disdained cosmopolitans at the Republican convention. Mitt Romney gave a speech attacking “eastern elites.” (Mitt Romney!) John McCain picked Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin is scary.

"David Brooks was doing fine until he said that Palin was smart. I am a Republican and I think she is not very smart at all. Conniving or crafty, yes. The article explains why I am so disillusioned with my party. It is devoid of good ideas and too willing to resort to bad mouthing opponents.

— Joe, Central PA"

"Amen, Amen, Amen. This is exactly the sort of even-handed criticism the Republican party needs to hear. As a graduate student currently on the path to a PhD, I am often shocked by my fellow conservatives who blindly attack anything resembling a reasonable idea simply because it doesn't fit within their established set of categories. We need a new generation of thinkers, men and women who aren't afraid to embrace new ideas no matter the source. Whatever the origin, a good idea is a good idea.

— Patrick McWilliams, Savannah, GA"

"While Sarah Palin may not be stupid , she is self indulgently ignorant and as Mark Shields has already pointed out, she suffers from that most insidious form of ignorance:she does not know what she does not know.
